AIMS
New Malden Counselling Service was started in 1995 by some committed people working in association with the Methodist Church. Our vision was to provide a professional counselling service. This has been achieved through bringing together a group of counsellors with different backgrounds and experience. Although based at a church, the Counselling Service is an independent body and is open to everyone. The service is confidential.

THE SERVICE
The Service offers general counselling enabling individuals to work through personal problems.

What sort of problems?

It could be
the loss of a relationship in life or death
the loss of a role in the family or at work
the loss of an ability through accident
or illness
it could be uncertainty about difficult choices or a feeling of paralysis about moving forward with a particular issue there may be problems resulting from low self esteem
It is difficult to cover all possible areas of need. Our counsellors are fully trained or in the last stages of training (where they are building up their experience) and bring skill and sensitivity to their work.

THE PROCESS
You can contact the Counselling Service yourself. If you prefer contact can also be made through a GP or other representative. An initial interview is given to assess the suitability of our service. The Service is part of a wider network of helping agencies and can often redirect people to other groups and resources. The help we give consists of weekly sessions of fifty minutes which will continue for an agreed period. These sessions take place in dedicated rooms at New Malden Methodist Church. Every attempt is made to chose a counsellor who is best suited to an individual's need.

FURTHER INFORMATION
If you would like further information about the Counselling Service, please write to the address on the front of this leaflet. Simple telephone messages can be left on a confidential answering machine which is listened to daily. We are always happy to ring back appropriately.

THE COSTS
The Counselling Service is a non-profit making organisation. The costs in running the service are reclaimed through fees which are charged at appropriate rates. These are negotiated at the initial interview. Whatever people can afford contributes to the service and signifies the value placed in it by its users.

THE FUTURE
The Counselling Service is developing all the time. At present we offer counselling to individuals, but we are open to other ways of working with people, and would want to respond to whatever needs present themselves.

CONFIDENTIALITY
Counsellors subscribe to the British Association for Counselling's Code of Ethics. All personal information shared with a counsellor is confidential to the Service. No information will be disclosed to a third party without the prior permission of the individual concerned, unless in exceptional circumstances e.g. requirements of a Court of Law.
