CUB
SCOUTS
New opportunities for
Scouting in New Malden.
The 2nd Malden Scout
Group is jointly sponsored by New Malden Methodist Church and St Joseph’s
Catholic Church in Montem Road. It provides challenging and fun activities
for boys and girls aged between 6 and 14. Members and Leaders are drawn from
both Churches.
During Term time Beavers (Age 6-8) meet at St Joseph’s. Cubs (Age 8 – 10½) meet at the Methodist Church and Scouts (Age 10½ - 14)
meet at St Joseph’s.
There are currently vacancies in Cubs &
Scouts, but Beaver numbers are restricted by Child Protection issues, so a
waiting list is operated for children aged 5+. For further details or to
request a Membership Application form please contact St Joseph's Parish
Office during Termtime on 8942 2602'
You might be wondering what’s been happening in
the church’s cub pack recently. ‘Cambridge pack’ as we’re now called started
the year last September with 22 cubs and we now have 35 in the pack. We
welcomed 7 new starters in February and will soon have to start turning cubs
away for the first time I can remember as 36 is our absolute limit!
We achieved our target of every cub getting at
least one activity badge last term. We all completed the Emergency Aid badge
and had a rota of Hobbies/Collectors badge presentations each week. We went
rifle shooting at 1st Malden, 10 cubs had a sleepover in the
Science Museum and 20 cubs went on the end of term outing to see the play
“James and the Giant Peach” at the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon . We had an
indoor camp fire evening which the cubs really entered into the spirit of
and which seems to have encouraged them to come to camp at the end of May
(25 have signed up so far!). At the end of term one cub’s mum arranged
ceramic painting for us and the cubs all made their own Christmas
decorations which were then glazed and fired and looked really impressive.

After Christmas we worked towards the District
Arts and Crafts competition. Our collage of a London bus (on display in the
hall) won us first place for that category and we came second overall.
We’re continuing to offer Scouting to a big group of children – boys AND
girls – with only two regular leaders. We’d welcome any offers of help from
any members of the church. Perhaps you have a hobby you could share with us
or you’d like to help us at camp (28th to 31st May).
Anyone aged 14 and over can get involved. Please come and talk to me if
you’re interested.
Cubs join
Scout Association recycling appeal
2nd Malden 'Cambridge' cubs have recently
joined the Scout Association's
recycling appeal for old mobile phones
and printer cartridges but we need YOUR
help. It's a fundraising
initiative where the cub pack is paid for collecting empty print
cartridges and old mobile phones.
Depending on the age and condition of
the items collected the pack receives from 20p to £15 for phones
and from 10p to £7.00 for laser and
ink-jet cartridges. The phones and cartridges are then recycled
so it's good for the environment as well as raising funds for the pack.
PLEASE let us have your old phones and cartridges. Donations can be left
in the 'Scouts' pigeonhole in the Welcome Area. Thank you. Jane Pringle.
